You’d be forgiven for calling 911 if you heard this dog’s bark – or, rather, scream.

A disconcerting video has captured a cute-as-a-button Maltese yelping at his owners behind the camera.

But the noise Cody makes when he opens his mouth sounds more like a man screaming in pain than a dog barking.

The footage has gone viral since it was uploaded on YouTube. And it’s also been the subject of many a thread on comment forum Reddit.

In the video, you can hear Cody’s owners calling his name repeatedly as the shaggy cream dog bounces around the living room floor.

And each time he hears it, the animal looks up at its owners and responds with the blood-curdling scream.

Some have questioned whether the shrieks are in fact coming from the pet, and not its owners or an internet prankster.

It’s not clear who originally uploaded the video or where it was filmed.

But one Reddit user commented that their neighbors have the same breed of dog and it makes the exact same sound.

‘The people who live across the street from us have the same type of dog, complete with howl,’ the user wrote.

For real? Some have questioned whether the bark is a prank though others have said their pets make the same noise

‘Soooo, if you wake up one morning and think you hear an adult… being assaulted, don’t worry. It’s just a dog.’

While another user wrote: ‘Had a dog just like this growing up. Had the cops called many, many times.’

If it is for real, Cody’s is hands down the weirdest howl ever.

My neighbour has a dog like this. Needless to say, I was on the verge of calling the SPCA one day. I don’t think it is funny at all. That dog will do what it needs for attention. All I could think of was that the dog didn’t have any water, or food, or was in harms way. There is something not right about allowing a dog to make a noise like this.
