Yelp Is Ruining My Business

Yelp Is Ruining My Business
“Help! Yelp is ruining my business!” This is the tearful phone call I get every week. Another struggling business owner, failing, due to an unfair negative review. Feeling helpless, alone, attacked, the emotion coming through the phone line sounds a lot like the rape victims I counseled in college. The same questions: How did this happen? Why me? And worse, why won’t anyone help me?

Why is it my phone that rings? Because I answer the phone when Yelp won’t. I listen when Yelp won’t. And I know, with the right guidance, they can overcome the attack, can regain their confidence and go back to being a rock star business. But for some, there will always be scars, and fear that it could happen again. The disgruntled customer who just can’t be satisfied, the new competitor moving in down the street… always causing a little catch in the throat and a slight flinch… wondering, is today the day it will happen again?

I know I’m going to get a lot of flack comparing Yelp to a rapist, but really, I’m comparing them to the gun the rapist is holding that allows them to commit the act in the first place.

I’m here to tell you, it doesn’t have to be that way. There is a reality where you can life fear free without the risk of sites like Yelp taking all your business away, and causing the phone to stop ringing.

Using Search Engine Optimization, you can ensure that you are on page 1, and yelp is nowhere to be seen. To do that you need a lot of fresh, relevant content, sharable, social, and directed back to your site. And Media attention!

I’m interviewed by the media at least once a week. Three times this week so far! Yesterday somebody said something about this site. I don’t even know where yet because my news clipping service hasn’t sent it. But they did, and 10,000+ new visitors arrived yesterday and viewed an average of 4.91 pages. They were reading about YOU, and your troubles with Yelp. Imagine if that media coverage was about your business. When those new visitors land on your site, what will they find? How long will they stay? And will you be building relationships with them from the moment they arrive?

There is a new book on this subject you should read, You Stock: Increase Sales Conversions by Branding with Personalized Marketing Photography. It’s on Amazon, and today it’s free. The key is to user your face in your branding, you are uniquely you and your competitors will only ever be able to be a paler lesser version of you. So why not use your most valuable asset to build brand trust with your customers?

And for those of you that want media coverage, please Tell Your Yelp Story! The more thumbs up you get, the higher the story will go in the media meter and more likely it will get mainstream coverage. The media is looking everyday for your story, make it easy to find!

You all sound like a bunch of babies that didn't get your way. Admit it, your restaurant sucks and someone called you out for it and now your whining online instead of admitting that maybe you suck at running a restaurant. You don't need consultation you need a wake up call. Maybe if you learned from your mistakes instead of blaming other people your restaurant would improve. No one is ruining your business you are ruining it by your inability to please people. Your marriage is probably unhappy, your children probably hate you. Give up. Kill your self.

Yelp manipulates and filters reviews. They force Organization of all types to play on their platform regardless. This is because anyone can add any organization to Yelp and then add or say anything (typically a negative irrational rant) they want. There is no true free speech with Yelp as the platform. It's a platform for bullies to be bullies and for both Yelp and bullies shake down organizations in various ways and for Yelp to make money on making your organization look better if you purchase Yelp's paid services. The Yelp platform simply perpetuates such platforms on the internet to the lowest common denominator and increases costs of doing business for everyone.

HERE IS THE SOLUTION TO GETTING BACK AT YELP. FIGHT FIRE WITH FIRE. SINCE MOST OF THE REVIEWS AGAINST YOUR COMPANY ARE BOGUS (AND YELP DOESN'T CARE), WE NEED TO HAVE A LIST OF ALL THE JUNIOR AND SENIOR LEVEL EMPLOYEES – THEN, FIND OUT WHAT BUSINESSES THEIR FAMILIES WORK FOR (LOOK AT THEIR LINKED-IN PROFILE.. THEIR BROTHERS / SISTERS / HUSBANDS / WIFES WILL ALL BE ON THEIR PROFILE). PROVIDE 1000'S OF BAD REVIEWS – BUT DON'T USE YELP AS THEY WILL JUST BE ERASED. GO ONTO SITES THAT COMPETE WITH YELP. TEAR-UP THOSE FAMILY MEMBERS.. RIP INTO THEM AND GIVE THEM HELL. LET THEM SEE WHAT IT FEELS LIKE!!!! THEN THEY WILL HATE THEIR FAMILY MEMBERS THAT WORK FOR YELP.

GUYS – IT'S THIS SIMPLE ATTACK THEIR FAMILY.. FRIENDS.. ANYONE IN THEIR LINKED-IN PROFILE.

I hope the veterinarian I reviewed feels like a rape victim. She blinded our cat using outdated medical information. 15 years out of date to be specific. She left us holding not only the bill from her clinic but the nearly 1000 dollars from the ER. It's sort of sad that every site you see makes it sound like every bad, really bad review a business gets is a lie and they're just being picked on. Considering we're not the first or the last to have issues with this vet and the state veterinary board fined her for her conduct I consider it a public service to warn everyone about this , and I say it with sarcasm, veterinarian.
BTW customers are pretty savvy at picking out the really outrageous reviews, they stink just like the fake Amazon reviews.

I;m a small business owner with a great amount of respect throughout my community along with Police Officers, Judges and many local church affiliates. I somehow received an angry customer that wasn't happy with not getting my company out there on a Saturday and put a rude and angry post online which I find malliscious and wrong! If anyone posts anything it should be challenged by the owner and verified first or I can ruin your business today! I' an furious! I tried contacting Yelp online and over the phone with a "very rude" woman that I should have censored! Help !

Yelp sucks because it allows malicious attacks on small businesses without ever confirming if the bad review is legitimate. Yelp makes its living off bad reviews not good ones. How is it that a site that charges for advertising can be a review site also? It is a conflict of interest and they should not be allowed to do this. Check out handsome Floyd's barbershop in raleigh nc on yelp and you will see how we have been attacked. If large groups of people band together and put tons of 5 star reviews on each others yelp pages it may start a movement that yelp can't stop.

    Yelp is bullshit!!!

Yelp is the voice of the consumer who after dealing with insane customer service. Usually after they get the money and the business refusing to even speak to the customer. Bad Yelp reviews are a self inflicted wound.

I have not gotten chance to think and reply yelp advertisement they 'suggested', but already noticed my five star reviews are gone, more lower ratings popping up. Devil! How can God let this savage wolf dressed in goat's shirt be so prevailing? Mafia in the new world.

  8. Dan

I second this statement left above! I totally agree!
Yelp is allowing false allegations to be posted. Fake profiles with no picture or false pictures to allow these people to put reviews, but forces business owners to put up a real picture of themselves to defend against fake profiles. Yelp has their own policies they don't even follow, unless it is used against business owners.
Yelp is allowing damages to business to occure with a provoking affect. All business should sue yelp for millions of dollars in damages to their business.
I could go on and on.

  9. Dan

After refusing to advertise with Yelp, my 4.5 star rating went to 1 star and out of all my favorable reviews only 1 nasty untrue negative review remains to be viewed. I called to complain and get excuses and no real answer on how that could happen. The sales people are rude and pushy, and apparently vengeful too!
There's got to be a way to get this information about Yelp out to more people!

Our Yelp site has only left on two negative reviews from our competition and left off nine five star reviews????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????

Justice has been done upon people who are one yelp from the year say 2005-6 who have really started off early to earn a top place on yelp. There is very little room for business of new or growing companies and yelp works hell as well as magic for the private companies. We are locksmiths and we have to ask yelp to approve our listings also and that was headache.

  12. gay men tube

Adult men older people aren't afflicted as much since kids, it's important regarding homosexual tubing to be familiar with exactly how older headsets disease could affect these individuals. Older ear canal disease is actually a result of an infection inside Eustachian tv, nearby the intrinsic hearing.

There are people that no matter how hard you try, will never be satisfied. One of them showed up in a review of my business of 24 years, and wrote bunch of inaccurate comments and misinformation. My 5 star rating vanished. Of the total 13 review my business has 12 are very positive, but 10 of them are filtered! And the negative one is one of the three that shows. Yelp is misusing its position, and ruining the small business, in favor of the big guys, and the ones who pay large sums for advertising. I am glad Yelp.com is a defendant in a class action suit in the Superior Court of California, in Ventura on 10/22/13. Hope they pay for their misconduct and ruining people's lives.

I am a small business owner for 9 years,,have very good loyal clients….on yelp there are 8 …,5,star reviews…dating from 2011 thru 2013…only 2 reviews show up.presently..the oldest reviews from 2011….the others have all been filtered out…8 months ago i received a call from yelp to advertise with them….cost was $390. a month….I said I could not afford that as I am a small business…the sales rep said I would be put at bottom of list…right away the next time I checked my current reviews had all been filtered out..all of my reviews have been legit….and not bogus as yelp implies..very frustrating as I notice one of my competitors have 26 reviews and they have been open only a year..obviously they are paying yelp….I believe they have misrepresented themselves as a non-bias review company that misleads the public….its unfortunate as i believe this has cost my business new clients…and subjected people to a lessor business….I have had numerous new clients who tried the other business….and say their service was not good…and that they had followed yelp to the other business……where can I join this class-action lawsuit!!!

    1. Ann

aha – the same thing happened to me – you cannot trust the online reviews. After I refused to advertise with Yelp all my old and new reviews got filtered. Then somebody wrote a fake review, with personal attacks, saying never to use this company and a bunch of lies. I asked Yelp to remove it but they insist that is a real person and that the person has a right to share their experience about our business. I think companies should ban users from writing reviews because most of the time these are fake. It seems Yelp is protected against being sued.
