Yelp of Honolulu has paired up with several Hawaii nonprofit organizations for a month-long series of events in October aimed at raising money and promoting volunteerism in the community.

It’s the third year Yelp of Honolulu has organized “Yelp Helps 2013” in conjunction with Aloha United Way.

“Aloha United Way works with so many nonprofits in the community, and so we work with them from start to finish for Yelp Helps,” said Community Manager Emi Hart. “They help us figure out the right way to distribute the money raised; so money at our last event in October will go to AUW.”

To kick off the October series this year, Yelp of Honolulu is hosting “Nerdy Dancing” party at 449 Cooke St. on Oct. 3 from 7 to 9 p.m. where attendees can network with Hawaii nonprofits, including Hawaii Literacy, Aloha United Way, Healthy Mothers Healthy Babies Coalition of Hawaii, Learning First, and more. Suggested $10 donations will benefit Hawaii Literacy.

Yelp of Honolulu is also rallying a team to support the Hawaiian Humane Society’s annual PetWalk fundraiser (a cause my labradoodle and boyfriend have joined, look for yours truly at the Oct. 6 walk).

Team Yelp is also throwing events with Hugs House, Hawaii Literacy and the Bishop Museum, among other events still in the planning phase.

The inspiration for Yelp Helps came from feedback Hart had been hearing: People want to give back to the local community, but they don’t always know which cause they want to align with, she said. The ultimate goal of this event is to serve as a networking opportunity to connect people with various causes that they will align with beyond the October events.
